The Essentials of Indian Philosophy by Mysore Hiriyanna (1949)

Philosophy is a riveting but often complex area of study and a good place to start is The Essentials of Indian Philosophy by Mysore Hiriyanna. An Indian philosopher, Sanskrit scholar and an authority on Indian aesthetics, Hiriyanna had a knack for taking the esoteric and discussing it with ease.

He wrote this book as a short, simple primer for those interested in Indian philosophy but unfamiliar with it.

This book guides readers through Vedic ideas and concepts, explores the six major schools of Indian thought and discusses the philosophies of Jainism and Buddhism too. A comprehensive summary, as it were, of a field notoriously difficult to define.
