The story of the Delhi Durbars

The Delhi Durbars of 1877, 1903 and 1911 were opulent affairs organized by the British Raj to show their pomp and might to the millions of Indians that they ruled over. These grand events were captured in a number of historic photographs, which tell a unique story. The DAG in Delhi, has organized a special exhibition of the photographs and other objects related to the three durbars. Curated by eminent Delhi historians Swapna Liddle and Rana Safvi, it brings alive a colonial attempt at co-opting Indian ceremonies and symbols to legitimize their rule.
