    BOOKMARK

When one thinks of the Constitution of India, the first image that comes to mind is a monumental legal document that outlines the governance and laws of the country. Yet, it is much more than that. It is a handcrafted wonder. A masterpiece of art and calligraphy. And a reflection of India’s rich cultural heritage.

The Constitution of India is not just a legal manuscript it is a visually stunning creation that embodies the spirit of a diverse and historic nation, inspired as it is by the great epochs of Indian history.

Two illustrated manuscripts of the constitution were handcrafted - —one in English and the other in Hindi. These manuscripts were then stored in helium-filled cases to preserve their longevity and are currently on display at the Indian Parliament, in New Delhi. The calligraphy was done by the master calligrapher, Prem Behari Narain Raizada in English and Vasant K Vaidya in Hindi. The illustrations were prepared under the guidance of artist Nandalal Bose and his team.

The illustrations were created at Kala Bhavan, a hub of artistic excellence at Shantiniketan established by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. It was here that Bose and his team drew inspiration from India’s rich history to craft a document that symbolizes the nation’s identity.
